WHAT IF ALL OF MALIBU READ THE SAME BOOK?
On April 11th, 2011 the Malibu City Council proclaimed May, 2011 “One Book, One City-Malibu Month”. In 2011, One Book, One City-Malibu celebrates literacy with To Kill A Mockingbird by Pulitzer Prize Winner Harper Lee. One Book, One City-Malibu is proud to join forces with Malibu High School and Malibu Middle School in celebrating this iconic and significant book on the 50th anniversary of its publication.
Malibu High School will host this year’s kick-off event on Saturday, April 30th at 3:00 pm at the outdoor amphitheatre. The event is open to the public and will include library and local dignitaries.This year One Book, One City-Malibu will add to its success a collaboration with Malibu Film Society when on May 1st all of Malibu is invited to screen the award winning film version of To Kill A Mockingbird. Following in the footsteps of cities across the country, ONE BOOK, ONE CITY-MALIBU promotes an intellectual and heartfelt bond among its citizens by inviting the entire community to come together around a single book. Now in its ninth year this literacy program has successfully reached individuals of all ages through a collaborative effort with Malibu High School, Friends of the Malibu Library, the Malibu Public Library, local book clubs and local bookstores. As awareness of this program increases, so has participation as evidenced by an annual ten percent increase in participant numbers.
